On Thursday's Snow Day, I decided to try my hand again at Opinion Miles Club.
As I wrote here, Opinion Miles Club is a great program to earn United miles. Take surveys and have miles deposited within a day in your MileagePlus account. Currently, they are still offering 600 miles after completing your first survey if you have the United MileagePlus credit card. Only 300 miles if you don't.
Throughout the day I took various surveys and earned 260 miles.
I qualified and finished five out of six surveys. Two of the surveys took less than 5 minutes to finish.
How long will it take you to complete your first survey? I can't say. Some people have stated it has taken 5 or 6 surveys to qualify & finish a survey. For me, it only took 2 surveys to earn my 600 points.
600 points isn't anything grand. However, add in the 750 points earned from MyPoints, wrote about here and you might be gaining momentum for your next trip.

Hilton & Citi Hilton HHoners & Bonus Points
Earlier this week, I wrote about how I earned 11,000+ Hilton Points with one stay. First2Board blogger, Travelblawg, wrote a similar piece about how he earn 25,000+ Hilton Points & 3,000 United points.
I highly recommend reading his article as it gives great advice. However, one of the best pieces of advice came from a comment left by Carol:
Here is the link, she provided. The offer lasts until February 28th.
Here is what you must do to earn 2,500 bonus points:
1) If you register for the promotion,
2) Stay at a Hilton prior to February 28,
3) Pay your stay with a Citi Hilton HHonors Visa
I wish I would have know about this promotion sooner. I would be 2,500 points richer. Easy Points! All you need to do is register your card.
My recommendation is to register for the promotion regardless if you have a planned upcoming Hilton Stay. Why? Because you never know when you might stay at a Hilton.
This promotion proves Travelbawg point even further. Always Register For Promotions!
Happy Sunday!

Was La Quinta's Promotion Click, Spin, Win A Ploy for Their IPO?
Multiple news outlets are reporting the Blackstone has decided to file an IPO for La Quinta.
La Quinta Holdings Inc. goal is to raise around $100 million from the IPO to repay debt. As of September 30, 2013, the company has $2.8 billion worth of debt.
In 2006, Blackstone acquired "La Quinta for $2.3 billion - not including about $800 million in debt - and has since invested hundred of millions of dollars to upgrade, expand, and promote the chain," according to the Wall Street Journal.
Over the past year, Blackstone has taken public about 6 different of its portfolio companies including hotel chains Hilton Worldwide and Extended Stay America. The decision to bring La Quinta public has been coming since last summer.
When I read this article, my first though goes to La Quinta's recent promotion Click, Spin, Win, which I wrote about here, was a ploy for its IPO. By the end of the promotion, 15,000 people were playing the game; most I assume were new members to La Quinta Returns. One could ponder, like me, that this promotion was a ploy by La Quinta to drive up membership prior to the IPO.
We would all be wrong. First, the IPO was filed confidentially in December and the public one in February. It would look bad if the two IPOs differed greatly. Second, according the IPO,
My belief is further support by Hilton's IPO. A few months prior to their IPO, Hilton devalued their Hilton Hhonors program drastically. At the time, the points/miles community though it was just another program devaluation. Months later, we learn the devaluation was apart of their IPO strategy to lower the value of its liability. Since Blackstone owns both Hilton and La Quinta, the assumption is that they would use the same strategy i.e. devaluation. But La Quinta gave players millions of points increasing their liabilities. The IPO noted that as of December 31, 2012 the total Returns liabilities was $12.1 million.
The only other possibility is the La Quinta's Click Spin, Win was a brand recognition strategy. A plan to get people to think about staying with La Quinta. Will it get more people to stay at La Quinta? I doubt, but only time will tell if the strategy will work.
Maybe I need to stopping thinking that every ploy by a company is evil!

"as of September 30, 2013, we [La Quinta] had nearly nine million members in our La Quinta Returns loyalty program, 2.4 million of which we consider active members (which generally refers to our loyalty program members who earn or redeem La Quinta Return points within the previous 18 months."Even if all 15,000 players were new members to La Quinta, they would represent .016% increase in membership. Not something that would sway investors to make a bet with them. Therefore, you would have to assume that the promotion was a ploy to increase recognition of La Quinta.

1 Stay = 14,543 Points
Last weekend, I had a 2 night stay at a Hilton Conference Center. Overall, the stay was good except for the lack of hot water one morning.
On Tuesday, I checked my Hilton account and learned that I earned 11,643 points from 1 stay.
As you can see, the points earned cam from multiple different sources.
First, I earned 7,000 points from the most recent Hilton promotion, as I wrote here. 1,000 points per night (2,000) + 5,000 points for staying 2 nights = 7,000!
Then the base points come from my bill. You earn 10 pts per $1 spent at the hotel minus certain expenses like taxes. I spent $266.50 at the hotel. That earned me 2,665 points.
Next, as a Gold member, I earn a 25% bonus on the base points. 2,665 x 25% = 663.
The last way I earned points is the 50% Bonus on Base Points is from choosing the Points & Points option. This option earns you an additional 5 Bonus Points per $1 spent.
Overall, the haul was pretty nice, but where did the last 2,900 points come from. Great question! One of the most important decisions on any trip is which credit card to use. This decision was easy for me. The card I used was the Citi Hilton Reserve:
The card earns you 10 points for every $1 spent on a Hilton Portfolio.
My $290 stay earned me 2,900 points from the credit card.
Credit Card - 2,900 points
Hotel Stay - 11,543 points
Total: 14, 543
A great haul for 1 stay at a Hilton!
What is the most points you have ever earn in 1 stay?

What I'll Be Doing On This Snow Day
As everyone has heard, a snow storm has hit the East Coast. For once, we have a snow day WITH snow. I could write about how to protect yourself from travel cancellations (wrote about that here) or about jaunts to warm destinations.
Since I am stuck at home, not really Metro is running, so I could go somewhere, I feel like I need to get some long-standing tasks done. Here are 10 things I hope to accomplish today:
1) Complete Federal Taxes (Maybe use this offer)
2) Book March Trip to Canada (looking at you United Miles)
3) Finish Hotel Confidential Reports (don't know about Hotel Confidential, see here)
4) Pack for this weekend (Get Away to the Mountains)
5) Research Australia // New Zealand Trip (I doubt I even do this today)
6) Research 15 Ways to Earn Hilton Points (upcoming series)
7) Complete eRewards or Opinion Miles Club - (I should earn some miles today, somehow)
8) Write a post on my secret love, Swagbucks.
9) Verify I have all my credit cards - I feel like I may be missing 1 or 2. I tend to leave them at bars
10) Drink??? Yes, best thing to do on a snow day is drink and I have this baby waiting for me:
Will I get all 10 items done? Probably not, but its better to have a list than sit in front of the TV waiting for midnight. Why Midnight? The release of Season 2 of this baby begins:

Who I Read
This past weekend, I taught at my fraternity's leadership conference. When I introduced myself to these young men, I told them that I travel frequently on my own dime. Immediately, they wanted to learn more about miles/points/travel.
As promised I to them, here are the list of bloggers that I read on a frequent basis:
This blog is focused on the best airfares out there for mileage run. However, many
of the deals are great for short/long vacations, as well.
A blog about the best deals out there to earn miles/points from airlines & hotels. His
posts are centered around one particular promotion and how to make it work for you.
A young guy traveling the world for as little as possible. Talks more about the lifestyle
of traveling than earning points/miles. Typically his posts are short ie what could be
discussed in a 30 second timeout.
If The Travel Playbook's posts are what can be discussed in a 30 second timeout. Mile
Nerd's posts are what can be screamed from the coach on the sideline to his players on
the field. His motto is "just the most miles in the fewest possible words." He lives up
to his motto with the occasional longer rant.
Keri and Jeanne are two fashionistas travelers. They are always travel for work and
play and doing it in style. They have almost perfected the work/play balance; even
thought it seems that they are constantly on an airplane to someone. For female
readers, they constantly talk about the best travel wear and 3oz toiletries and
cosmetics.
I hope these blogs help you learn more about the hobby that I love.

A Cold Shower Turns Into An Important Travel Lesson
On Saturday morning, I awoke to take a shower at the Hilton. After a long night, all I wanted was a nice hot shower. What did I get? Ice cold water.
On my way to breakfast, I sent this tweet:
I meant to say.... "brrrr....no hot water this morning at @hiltonhotels Stamford."
Less than 15 minutes later, I got this response from Hilton Help
I sent them my confirmation number and I got this response:
Shortly after this tweet arrived, I received a call on my cell phone from the on-duty manger. She wanted to explain that the engineers had informed her that hot water was slowly going back to normal levels. I explained to her that the tweet was joke, but I appreciated the call.
In less than 90 minutes from my initial tweet, I got a call from the manager. Even though the call was not necessary, it was cool that @hiltonhelp got management to call me. Hopefully, I could get the same attention when I actually need something.
Most other hotel have twitter accounts as well:
Hyatt - @hyattconcierge
Starwood - @starwoodbuzz
IHG - @ihgcare
Marriott - @marriott
Kimpton - @kimpton
I think its important to follow all of them. You never know when you might need them.
Social Media, how did we exist without you? Oh, that's right, we had to complain in person.
