Birth Place of the Ice Cream Cone: Doumar's Cones & Barbecue

Have you ever wonder where the ice cream cone was invented?

I have! Last night, I went to the restaurant where the ice cream cone was invented: somewhat.

On the corner of Monticello and 19th in Norfolk, VA is Doumar's Cones & Barbacue.

The reason why I say Doumar's is "somewhat" the birthplace of the ice cream cone is that Abe Doumar actually created it at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. According to their website, "One evening he purchased a waffle from a nearby vendor, rolled it into a cone and topped it with ice cream. It was so successful, he designed a four-iron waffle machine and brought his parents and brothers to America. During the Jamestown Exposition of 1907, he launched his ice cream cone business at Ocean View Amusement Park."

The original machine from the fair

It wasn't until 1934 that the Doumar family moved to its current location. The inside has an old ice cream parlour feel.

The price of the menu was super cheap: shakes for $2.80, burgers for $2.40. The shakes were super tasty especially the Orange Freeze.

The hamburgers and grilled cheese were tasty. My BBQ sandwich was ok, but I would not order it again:

We ate inside, but you can eat at your car as well. They bring these trays that latch onto your car, very 1950s.

Guy Farieri has visit Doumar's twice with Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives:

If you are every in Norfolk, VA ever, defiantly stop by Doumar's!!!
