Ink Cartridges Can Be A Gold Mine

What do printer and boat have in common? They both can cost a fortune to keep running....

Printer ink isn't cheap, but its a necessary component of a working printer.

About 10 years ago, I came across the website 123inkjets.com. I was in college and needed to find a cheap replacement ink cartridge for my printer. Ever since that day, I have been a loyal fan of the website.

Currently, AAdvantage Shopping Mall is offering 12pts per $1 spent at 123Inkjets.com I am not positive that this offer is for everyone or only those who have CitiCards.

Also, you can use code FROST and save 15% off your order and free shipping for orders over $55.

Typically, I don't write about specials on shopping malls, because they change so quickly. However, I have used this company many, many times. And now you can earn 12 miles per $1. Its a win, win, win!

Check Your IHG Balances

(Major HT to Frugal Travel Lawyer)

Yesterday, Frugal Travel Lawyer reminded me of a very valuable benefit of the IHG Visa. The IHG/Priority Club Visa offers a variety of benefits:

The most unique benefit of this Priority Club Card is the "10% Rebate on IHG Rewards Club Point Redemptions." Yes, I know the AAdvtange Citi Visa offers the same benefit. Use 30,000 points for one night at an Intercontinental and get 3,000 back after your stay. The 100,000 points maximum rebate is very generous.

Frugal Travel Lawyer's post was her story about not getting the rebate. After using points for an October stay, she still has not received the rebate. I forgot about this benefit. Forgot about it completely. On my trip to Buenos Aires, I used 90,000 Priority Club points for 3 nights at the Intercontinental. With the rebate, I should have receive 9,000 points back.

After reading her article, I went to my IHG account to see if I received the rebate. To my surprise, the 9,000 points were in my account.

Looking further down, I saw another rebate:

My initial reaction was confusion. Why was I getting 3,200 points back? After a few minutes, I remembered that I spent 32,000 points for my Ambassador Status. Was this a mistake?

The answer is no. According to a IHG customer service representative, the rebate is for any points redemption including ambassador status.

The moral of this post:

"if you have the IHG Visa and have used IHG points, in 2013, make sure the rebate has hit your account."

Should I or Shouldn't I Particpate?

Most of the community has discussed the 2,000 mile offer from AAdvantage Shopping mall for spending $35 by September 30th.  My problem is deciding to participate or not.

When I first glanced at the email with the promotion, I dismissed it. All I read was the subject headline. I though the spend was higher based upon previous similar promotions.  After a few days of blog posts, I went back to the promotion's email and finally read the details:

Still I did not plan on participating. I couldn't come up with anything to purchase that cost $35. My next thought was to just spend $35 on anything to earn the points. Earning 2,000+ points for spending $35 is a good deal. To purchase 2,000 miles from AA, the cost would be $93.43.

Yesterday, Frequent Miler had a great write up about the promotion. It was in this article that I got a closer look at the promotion and I missed an important detail. The $35 spend requirement is "cumulative" not all in one purchase. I never clicked the link on the email, so I missed the terms and conditions!

With this new information, I am leaning towards participating in the promotion. However, I still can't think of something or things to purchase.  The only thing I NEED is a purple morph suit for the upcoming Northwestern football game in October.

But $50 is more than I want to spend for the suit. I bought Blue for $20 at Walmart.

If you are undecided like me, Frequent Miler post has some interesting ways to complete this spend, but none of them make sense for me.

Therefore, I still have a conundrum.  To participate or not?

JD's Newbie Airline Choice

Important Note:  Chris and I may talk about the loyalty credit card for our particular airline and hotel in these posts. Credit card sign-up bonuses are an important part of the “game.” If we do decided to use credit card links, they will be public application links taken from the issuer's direct website. We do not earn income from you applying from the links. Similarly, please take an extra minute or two before applying for credit cards. If you do not pay your credit card balance off every month then you should stay away from this aspect of the game. Credit cards can lead to major long-term problems if not used correctly. I encourage you to read my post on Young People and the Chains of Credit Card Debt for more details.

My choice for the best airline for a Newbie is US Airways. Unconventional choice, many of you are saying.

US Airways’s frequent flyer program is called Dividend Miles. With Dividend Miles, US Airways can get you free flights to over 200 destination in the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean, Central and South America. US Airways has hubs in Charlotte, NC, Philadelphia, and Phoenix and a large focus city in Washington, DC.

Why is this important?

It allows you to get regularly within the United States for as cheap as 25,000 Dividend Miles and Europe and South America for as little as 60,000 Dividend Miles. In addition, throughout the year, US Airways has time periods that offers discounts on award travel. For example, in 2014, one can spend 35,000 miles for a seat to South America in economy, during February 3- 13 & March 17-April 3.

If you want to spend the miles on premium seats, US Airways can help as well. A ticket to Africa in Business Class costs you 110,000 miles and even stranger a trip to Northern Asia with a stopover in Europe cost only 90,000 miles. This is compared to 120,000 United Mileage Plus Miles for business class to Northern Asia or Africa. American Airlines business class seat costs 150,000 miles to Africa and 100,000 miles to Northern Asia.

The other major benefit of Dividend Miles is that it can be used on other carriers. US Airways is a member, for the near future, of the Star Alliance. This is a golden opportunity. The Star Alliance is made up of over 25 International Airlines and flies to over 1,300+ airports in 190+ countries. Dividend Miles opens the world to you.

The ability to easily spend Dividend Miles is not the only reason, why I am recommending US Airways to my newbie friends. Dividend Miles are very easy to obtain, as well. For instance, US Airways has a cobranded card with Barclays. The offer on the US Airways Main Page offers 30,000 miles after your first purchase with an $89 annual fee. Not many credit cards offer that many points after a first use.

Another way to obtain points is to buy them. Every month, US Airways has offers that range from 30% to 100% mileage bonuses. I don't recommend buying points. Yes, it can bank you easy points, but the cost does not always make sense. However, if you are short 10,000 mile to get an award trip, US Airways constant mileage promotions will make the award trip cheaper.

Another way to earn Dividend Miles is to use various US Airway partners. From eating out Dining Rewards to clicking on links through eMiles, Dividend Miles can be earn by doing almost everything in your life. If you are staying at hotels or rent cars, many Dividend Miles can be earn as well. Finally, you can earn miles at the ratio of one (1) mile flown = one (1) mile earned on many Star Alliance airlines.

The final reason why US Airways is a great airline for newbies is the future. US Airways and American Airlines is eventually going to merge into one airline. Subsequently, the Dividends Miles and AAdvantage programs will become one. If history is any indicator of the future, Dividend Miles will transfer 1 to 1 into AAdvantage similar to the Continental and United merger. Therefore, when US Airways leaves the Star Alliance for OneWorld, your miles can be used there as well. It is the best of both worlds. You can use your miles now in the Star Alliance or later in the OneWorld Alliance.

US Airways Dividend Miles was my first frequent flyer account and over the past 12+ years, it has treated me well and I know it will treat you, newbie, equally as well.

Another One Bites the Dust

I arrived home tonight to some bad news. I received a letter from Citi Bank letting me know they are raising the annual fee on my Citi AAdvantage card from $85 to $95.

The reason for the change in annual fee, "In April 2012, we upgraded the benefits that came with your
Citi / AAdvantage credit card. These exciting benefits resulted in a change in the card's annual membership fee."

The only major benefit, I remember, is a 10% rebate of AAdvantage miles redeemed. Is that worth $10 more a year?

The change happens in May 2013 on your next anniversary. For me that is in October.

A copy of the letter I received is below:

This letter made my decision easier.... Na Na Na, Hey Hey Goodbye Citi AAvantage?

Did you get a similar letter? If so, does it change your mind in keeping this card?

Groupon and LivingSocial

I must confess. Two years ago, I was a Groupon and LivingSocial addict. I would buy daily deals almost every week. I would try new restaurants, visit new museums, and do new activities.

I had to pull the plug on my love of Groupon and LivingSocial. I came to this realization when I looked at the number of Groupons, I bought, but had expired without me using them. I was wasting too much money and not getting a return on my money.

Something changed over the past month and I am buying Groupons and Livingsocial deals again, but I am being selective. A Groupon to my favorite restaurant, great! A Livingsocial deal to Brookstone, perfect!

My courtship with Groupons and Livingsocial has been triggered by two things:  a new found self control and founding out that I can earn points for buying these deals. Many of the shopping portals are giving points out for buying deals from Groupon and Livingsocial.

Here are a few of the current point offers:

LivingSocial:

Chase Ultimate Rewards: 3 pts per/$
United Milageplus: 2 pts per/$
USAirways: 2 pts per/$
American Airlines AAdvantage: 3 pts per/$
Delta: 2 pts per/$
Southwest: 2 pts per/$
Priority Club: 3 pts per/$

Groupon:

Chase Ultimate Rewards: 4 pts per/$
United Milageplus: 2 pts per/$
USAirways: 1 pts per/$
American Airlines AAdvantage: 2 pts per/$
Delta: 2 pts per/$
Priority Club: 3 pts per/$
Southwest: 2 pts per/$

By taking an extra minute by going through a shopping portal first, you will earn points on every dollar that you spend. It is important to note that you will earn points only on the money that you spend. For example, if you get a $50 Groupon to a new restaurant for $25, you will earn points on the $25. Using the Chase Ultimate Rewards, that 100 points for an extra minutes worth of work.

Take an extra minute and earn points for those Groupons and LivingSocial!
