A Constant Reminder

Last week I went on my first business trip ever: a quick two day trip to a sales conference in Richmond. We stayed at the Richmond Marriott, which I reviewed here. The stay was average to say the least.

What bothered me of this stay was what was written on my key card:

The hotel wrote my rate on my key card envelope. This isn't the first time a hotel has written my rate on the hotel key. However, this is the first time I have questioned why its there.

Why do hotels need to write down the rate? Do I get better service if I pay more? Worse service if I am staying on points? My guess is that neither is true. Then again why the need?

The reason why I bring it up is that my room was small, elevators ran slow and staff was slow. Not Southern slow. Just, I don't care slow. Every time I looked down at this envelope, I questioned if my stay was worth $159 a night. Especially after I learned that the Hilton Garden across the way street was only $119.

Anyone know the reason for the rate on the key card holder?

Bill Marriott's 12 Rules for Success

One of my favorite reads is Marriott on the Move. The blog is written by Bill Marriott, former Chief Executive Officer, and the Executive Chairman of the Board for Marriott Internationals' Chain. In Marriott on the Move, he talks about leadership and management.

I am a geek for anything organizational development. Therefore, I read any new post almost immediately. His most recent post was amazing.

His 12 Rules for Success:

  1. Challenge your team to do better and do it often
     2.  Take good care of your associates, and they'll take good care of your customers, and
          they'll come back

     3.  Celebrate your people's success, not your own.

     4.  Known what you're good at and keep improving.

     5.  Do it and do it now. Err on the side of taking action.

     6.  Communicate by listening to your customers, associates and competitors.

     7.  See and be seen. Get out of your office, walk the talk, make yourself visible
          and accessible.

     8.  Success is always in the details.

     9.  It's more important to hire people with the right qualities than with
          specific experience.

   10.  Customer needs may vary, but their bias for quality never does.

   11.  Always hire people who are smarter than you are.

   12.  View every problem as an opportunity to grow.

A Cold Shower Turns Into An Important Travel Lesson

On Saturday morning, I awoke to take a shower at the Hilton. After a long night, all I wanted was a nice hot shower. What did I get? Ice cold water.

On my way to breakfast, I sent this tweet:

I meant to say.... "brrrr....no hot water this morning at @hiltonhotels Stamford."

Less than 15 minutes later, I got this response from Hilton Help

I sent them my confirmation number and I got this response:

Shortly after this tweet arrived, I received a call on my cell phone from the on-duty manger. She wanted to explain that the engineers had informed her that hot water was slowly going back to normal levels. I explained to her that the tweet was joke, but I appreciated the call.

In less than 90 minutes from my initial tweet, I got a call from the manager. Even though the call was not necessary, it was cool that @hiltonhelp got management to call me. Hopefully, I could get the same attention when I actually need something.

Most other hotel have twitter accounts as well:

Hyatt - @hyattconcierge

Starwood - @starwoodbuzz

IHG - @ihgcare

Marriott - @marriott

Kimpton - @kimpton

I think its important to follow all of them. You never know when you might need them.

Social Media, how did we exist without you? Oh, that's right, we had to complain in person.

Earn Up To 50,000 Marriott Points With Refer A Friend

Marriott is out with a new promotion that earns you points for refer friends to the Marriott Rewards Program.

I learned about this promotion from an email sent earlier today. The promotion is kinda simple.

  • Refer a friend that isn't a Marriott Reward Member
  • If that friend enrolls and makes a stay within 365 of enrollment, you and they earn 2,000 points
  • You/They will earn 2,000 points for each of the first 5 stays within 365 days of enrollment
  • You can earn 50,000 points from this promotion

Looking at the terms and conditions, you can find an important rule:

  • Sponsorships are limited to 5 new members each calendar year. New members who join through the Refer A Friend program must designate Marriott Rewards points as their earning preference.
  • Miles earning preference is not an option with the Refer A Friend program.

Therefore, your friend must choose Marriott points for you to earn the bonus.

You will need a Marriott Reward account to participate. To start the invites, go to this website:

http://www.marriott.com/marriott-rewards/refer-a-friend.mi

If you aren't a member of Marriott Rewards and would like an invite, email me at jdteitelman@gmail.com

Not a bad way to earn points . . .

Marriott to Open Hotel In Bosnia & Herzegovina

Bosnia & Herzegovina is a country in transition. After a long period of war, independence and reconciliation, the country is starting to make move into tourism destination.

One big step towards becoming a tourism destination is attracting international hotel chains. When international hotel chains are willing to invest money into your country, this signals stability. Average tourists need that idea of stability to come to visit.

Early this month, Marriott announced that they plan to open its first hotel, a Residence Inn, in Bosnia and Herzegovina. "The 75-suite Residence Inn Sarajevo is expected to open in late 2014 and will operate as a Marriott franchise, owned by SEIC Hospitality and managed by Interstate Hotels & Resorts." The hotel will be located 20 minutes from the airport, near the old city.

While studying abroad, I had the opportunity to visit Sarajevo. My class stayed at the famed Holiday Inn.

http://www.tacso.org
During the war, the Holiday Inn was where the international journalist stayed. The hotel was bombed and half the hotel became uninhabitable.

www.theguardian.com/
Don't be confused by the name, Holiday Inn Hotel Sarajevo. The hotel no longer has affiliation with the Holiday Inn/IHG Group. The Holiday Inn Hotel is quite a distance from the old town, where the majority of attractions are located. Therefore, the location for the Residence Inn maybe a better place to say. However, if you visit Sarejvo, you must visit the Holiday Inn for a drink. It has a place in the city's dark history.

For those you are interested, National Geographic Magazine named Sarajevo as a must see city in 2014.

Maybe I need to add Sarajevo to my list of places to revisit!

Earn Up To 16 Rapid Reward Miles Per $1 Spent @ Marriott

I wrote about here about how you can earn up to 11 United Mileage miles per $1 spent at Marriott. Shortly after posting, a stumbled upon a similar promotion to earn Rapid Reward miles for buying the same Marriott Gift Cards (H/T again to Loyalty Traveler) After thinking about it for a while, I realized that the same tactics used in my United post could be used for the Southwest promotion.

Follow the steps below to earn at least 16 Rapid Reward miles per $1 spent at Marriott

From August 1st until September 26nd, you can earn up to 12 Rapid Reward miles per $1 spent on gift cards through this link. Maximum of 12,000 miles can be earned.

I purchased Marriott Gift Cards for the holidays last year. These are actual gift cards, not e-gift cards. They ship them to you in the mail. The cheapest option for delivery only cost $1 and gets the card to you in less than 10 business days.

My plan is to use the gift cards for future hotel stays. Gift cards can't be used for prepaid nights. However, some people have indicated that they have gotten local hotel staff to reverse prepaid hotel stay charges allowing guests to use a Marriott gift card.

+ 12 Miles Per $1

Pay for the gift cards with your Chase Sapphire Card. Since you are buying directly from Marriott, you will earn 2 Ultimate Reward Points per $1. Ultimate Reward points can be transferred to Rapid Reward miles at a 1:1 ratio

+2 Miles Per $1

When its time to book your Marriott stay, go through the Ultimate Reward Shopping Portal. Currently, you can earn 2 Ultimate Reward Points per $1 spent by going through the Portal. Points are only earned on the base rate of the hotel, not the taxes. You will need to put a credit card down to hold the room. The gift cards won't work to hold the room, but you can pay with the gift card later.

+2 Miles Per $1

Let's put it together now:

+12 Miles - Purchase Gift Cards (Pay for Future Stays with Cards)
+2 Miles - Purchase Gift Cards with Chase Sapphire
+2 Miles - Go Through Ultimate Reward shopping portal to Book Hotel Nights
----------

+16 Miles per $1

I have earned miles for each of the steps outlined above. The only one I have not tried out is paying for hotel nights with gift cards and earning miles through the Ultimate Reward shopping portal. In theory, it should work.

Unlike the United MileagePlus offer, where you can earn up to 2 miles per $1 spent, stays at all Marriott's earn a flat 600 Rapid Reward miles regardless of hotel brand.

This is a personal choice if you want to earn Rapid Reward miles, instead of Marriott points. Personally, I think it depends upon your travel goals. I have no use for Marriott points, as I almost never stay there except when traveling with CashBack Boy. However, I have a $50 stay coming up, so I might switch to earn 600 Rapid Reward miles rather than 50 United miles.

To earn airline miles for Marriott stays, you have to switch your earning preference. To do this, sign into your Marriott Reward account and go to "My Account Overview."

Click on the Member Profile button:

 Now, click on Earning Preferences:

Finally, choice airline miles, pick your preferred airline and enter you frequent flyer number

From now on, you will earn airlines miles; instead, of Marriott Points.

A few things to remember:

          1) The gift card promotion starts 8/1 and ends 9/26

          2) You need to book your hotel nights through Ultimate Reward Portal

          3) You need to switch your earning preference to airline miles and put in your Rapid Rewards number

I hope that those who prefer Southwest miles over United will take advantage of this offer.

Earn up to 11 MileagePlus Miles Per $1 Spent with Marriott

Earlier this month, United and Marriott decided to hook-up and start a very unique partnership. You can read about it here, here, and here. This post isn't about that partnership, but what has resulted in that partnership.

One of the outcomes of the partnership is the ability to earn up to 11 miles per $1 spent at Marriott.

Earlier this week, Loyalty Lobby wrote about an offer that earns United Award Miles for every dollar spent on Marriott gift cards. From August 7th until September 7th, you can earn up to 5 MileagePlus miles per $1 spent on gift cards up to 7,500 miles.

I purchased Marriott Gift Cards for the holidays last year. These are actual gift cards, not e-gift cards. You will receive your purchase in the mail.

+ 5 Miles Per $1

Pay for the gift cards with your Chase Sapphire Card. Since you are buying directly from Marriott, you will earn 2 Ultimate Reward Points per $1. Ultimate Reward points can be transferred to MileagePlus miles at a 1:1 ratio

The gift cards won't work to hold your reservation, but you can pay with the gift card later.

+2 Miles Per $1

The final piece of the puzzle involves earning United MileagePlus miles; instead, of Marriott Reward points. Stays at JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, Renaissance Hotels, Marriott Resorts, Ritz-Carlton, Edition, and Gaylord hotels earn 2 miles per US$ spent. Stays at all other Marriott chains earn only 1 mile per US$.

United miles can only be earned for Marriott stays, if you switch your earning preference.

+ Up to 2 Miles Per $1

Let's put it together now:

+5 Miles - Purchase Gift Cards (Pay for Future Stays with Cards)
+2 Miles - Purchase Gift Cards with Chase Sapphire
+2 Miles - Go Through Ultimate Reward shopping portal to Book Hotel Nights
+2 Miles - Switch earning preference to airline miles - stay at higher level Marriott Hotels
----------

+11 Miles per $1

I have earned miles for each of the steps outlined above and earned miles. The only one I have not tried out is paying for hotel nights with gift cards and earning miles through the Ultimate Reward shopping portal. In theory, it should work.

A few things to remember:

          1) The gift card promotion starts 8/7 and ends 9/7

          2) You need to book your hotel nights through Ultimate Reward Portal

          3) You need to switch your earning preference to airline miles and put in your MileagePlus number

Yes, this is not the easiest way of earning United miles. It has multiple steps and requires some planning in advance. I have two Marriott stays in the next 90 days and I plan on paying them with gift cards, only after booking the stays through the shopping portal. My stays are at lower level Marriott hotels, so I will only earning 10 miles per $1. Still not to shabby . . .

Is there any better than getting miles for doing what you were planning on doing anyway?

Earning United Miles Through Hotel Stays

If you are traveling on United and earning miles that way there is a good chance that you might be staying at a hotel in the process. Many of the major hotel brands offer earning options for some combination of United miles and their hotel points. United has a page that shows all of the hotel partners that they have that you can earn United miles on. Often they will have specials for specific hotel chains that can be great to use if you are traveling and need a hotel. In my case I stay often at Hilton branded hotels and Hilton has an option to earn both points in their HHonors program as well as miles in an airline program, in my case United.

Earn miles hotels

Hotels

Earn award miles with partners such as Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and many more.

There are also ways to transfer hotel points TO airline points, but this is most often not a great value. For example you can transfer SPG points to United, but at a 2:1 ratio which kills all of the transfer value as you automatically loose half of the points you are transferring. But the option is out there if you need to consider it as a way to earn points, just tread carefully, do your research and make sure it's actually a good deal for you.

Marriott Takes Aim At Millennials

Marriott Hotels and Resorts is launching a $30 million global campaign to target generation X and Y travelers to bring them back to the 56-year old flagship Marriott brand.

The branding campaign, called "Travel Brilliantly" will feature a new set of ads that attempts to brand Marriott as the brand that will seamlessly let business travelers blend and move between their business lives and their personal lives, all while staying connected.

One of the shots for Marriott's "Travel Brilliantly" Campaign (Image: The New York Times)

Marriott decided to launch the campaign specifically targeted at millennials because the don't see anyone else in that space. Mara Hannula, vice president for global marketing of Marriott Hotels say in today's New York Times article,  “We haven’t seen any other hotel brand capturing younger travelers in a very authoritative way. We see this is as a big opportunity for Marriott.”

This is where Marriott goes off the rails a little bit. There are many brands that are starting to target millennials, but instead of them being the flagship brands (Your Hilton, Hyatt, etc.) it's more often an offshoot brand that is focused on the young business traveler. Take the Aloft hotel chain from Starwood. The open and modern lobbies that often have a bar area with pool tables and lots of work spaces for the traveler that wants to be social while traveling. If you favor staying in the room features nearly every plug and connector you could want for your technology needs. Brands like Aloft prove that Marriott is not the first to go after this market, and they will have to catch up and get some buy in from young business travelers if the idea will be successful. The first step is convincing travelers that there is something different than their parent's or grandparent's Marriott.

George Costanza was right: Double Dipping is OK!

Everything that happens in the world can always be brought back to Seinfeld somehow. In an 1993 episode, George accompanies his current girlfriend to her aunt's wake. It is at the wake that a young boy accuses George of double-dipping his chip...

George was correct "double-dipping" is perfectly ok, especially in the points world. In the points and miles world, the double-dipping doesn't involve chips, but rather earning extra points.

For instance, on our Memorial Day trip, we stayed at two Marriott to participate in Marriott's Unexpected Bonus. We earned Marriott Reward points for every dollar we spent on the hotel rooms. Most people would be happy with getting points for their stay. However, you shouldn't! I earned an additional 2 Ultimate Reward points per $1 spent by simply going to the Marriott website through the Ultimate Reward portal.

Purchase DateRewards MerchantRewards Earned
5-17-2013Marriott226 extra points
5-17-2013Marriott280 extra points

Marriott isn't the only hotel that one can double-dip. In the Ultimate Reward Portal, one can earn additional points with Best Western, Choice Hotels, Holiday Inn/Intercontinental Hotels. Also, the Ultimate Reward portal allows one to earn points on travel booking sites Hotwire, Hotel.com, Orbitz, and Travelocity. Almost every airline and hotel chain has an online points/miles earning portal. However, not all point earning portals allow points to be earned for booking hotels through them.

For many this is not earth shattering news. Double-dipping is common practice in the points community; actually Frequent Miler writes about it all the time. This is the cheapest way of earning points, because it doesn't cost you a thing except extra time. The hardest part of earning points this way is remembering to go though the portal first. I am guilty of leaving valuable points on the table by forgetting to go through the portal first. I always kick myself after I hit the submit button.

George was correct, Double-Dipping is perfectly acceptable.

Hotel Review: Richmond Marriott

For our Memorial Day Weekend Trip, we spent our first night at the Richmond Marriott. This hotel is across the street from the Richmond Convention Center.

When I was booking the room, we had the option to get valet and internet for $10 more. I jumped on that offer because valet parking for 1 night was $26.00. After driving up to the hotel, the valet crew of 8+ were ready to help us with our bags and the car. The valet crew was the best set of employees that we encountered during our quick say.

As soon as you enter the hotel, there was a glass pane of water. The feature was neat and gave the hotel a modern feel.

The hotel lobby has many places to sit:

The check-in desk was to the left of the lobby:

Check-in was quick. Very quick. 3 minutes in and out. The staff person was cold and spoke very fast. I had to stop her a few times and ask questions especially about the prepaying for the valet. She did not seem to care. We had the same women check us out. On my bill was a charge for the valet that should not have been there. She gave no apoligie. Actually she said nothing, only handing me a correct bill. This coldness was a common theme from the staff. One quick note, the hotel was overrun by high school volleyball players. There were kids running around all weekend. The hotel separated us from those staying for the tournament. We were grateful for this action.

The room was on the small side. The beds were tight for two dudes:

When we arrived in the room, the bathroom only had one towel. One towel for four people. Worse, on my reservation, I ask for extra towels. Someone else must have gotten my extra towels. A quick call to housekeeping resulted in towels being delivered within 5 minutes.

The hotel had this old color scheme: red and gold. It was not pleasant to my eye. Actually, it hurt my eyes.

The hotel had a Starbucks and T-Miller's Sports Bar in the lobby. Both of them were packed with tweens.

On the second floor was the gym and pool. No pictures of the pool because of little kids. However, the tweens running amock caused the hotel put a staff member in the gym to watch over the kids.

Overall, if you are looking for an average hotel, then stay at the Richmond Arriott.
